The Ladies Book Club at Old Palm Golf Club meets every month to discuss the latest bestsellers or simply favorites that may be recommended. The latest book that the club members read was âMy Fatherâs Paradise: A Sonâs Search for His Jewish Past in Kurdish Iraqâ by journalist Ariel Saber, a memoir that won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Autobiography. It tells the true story of Saberâs quest to reconcile past and present by accompanying his father to a small village in Iraqi Kurdistan. When his father lived there in the 1940s, the village was so isolated that the people still spoke Aramaic, the language spoken during the time of Jesus but displaced centuries ago through much of the Middle East. In his book, Saber brings his fatherâs ancient village to life and uncovers a vanished history of an area thatâs now at the center of the worldâs attention. Thought-provoking books such as âMy Fatherâs Paradiseâ always encourage lively discussions at the Old Palm Ladies Book Club. Residents are welcome to join in over coffee and cookies at the Club.
