The slow-flowing, immensely scenic Loxahatchee River winds through Palm Beach County before finally flowing into the ocean through the Jupiter Inlet. One of the best places to learn about the river’s 260-square-mile watershed and its great environmental value is at the Loxahatchee River Center, which is located less than 15 miles from Old Palm Golf Club. The center is an enlightening setting featuring different marine species, interactive exhibits and a touch tank that represents various river systems, including the freshwater cypress swamp and marine ecosystem. To enhance the experience, visitors are welcome to participate in any of the recurring events. For instance: • Every Saturday (2pm-3pm) there is a river center tour and fish feeding. • The first Friday of every month (12pm), the Friends of the Loxahatchee River present a seminar on subjects such as river restoration and cultural aspects of the river. During the tours and presentations, you will learn all sorts of fascinating facts about the Loxahatchee River, which is Florida’s first federally designated Wild and Scenic River. For more information about the river center, call 561-743-7123 or send an email to rivercenter@loxahatcheeriver.org
