In January, health coach Diane Lusk held a fascinating discussion at Old Palm on the effects of refined sugar in the diet. This month, Lusk captured the attention of members with another session on a different subjectâtoxins and how they affect the endocrine system.
Both natural and manmade substances can act as toxins that disrupt the endocrine system, which is a collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, mood and many other things. Toxins, known as endocrine disrupters, may be in pesticides, pharmaceuticals or even everyday items such as plastic bottles, detergents and cosmetics.
Lusk not only explained the effects of the toxins but how to avoid them. For instance, you might eat fewer animal products, drink water filtered to remove atrazine and lead, and consume seafood that is low in mercury. As the members of Old Palm listened intently to Lusk, they enjoyed a healthy snack she had prepared for the session.
This was the second of five monthly sessions that Lusk will hold at Old Palm. The others will discuss the benefits of juicing, healthy shopping and eating for energy.
