Lee Bladen’s Turf Talk: Attention Members!

June 13, 2012

Please take caution with your children and pets, fumigant is a chemical, and was applied to some of the golf course.
Please be aware yesterday, June 11, 2012 we completed the  sterilization  process;  Fumigation on the following Greens:  The Golf Studio, Practice and Chipping Greens, Putting Green on Hole #1  and Holes 1 - 6, 9, 15 and 17. Soil fumigation is a soil sterilization process similar to tenting a house for termites. It is one process in greens renovation that is recommended by the United States Golf Association Greens Division and the number one choice among golf course superintendents, builders and architects. The targeted pests in this procedure are diseases, nematodes, weeds, weed seeds, and noxious grasses. The fumigation process was handled by TriEst Ag Group a leader in fumigation for almost 50 years. Their applicators are certified and have an impeccable safety record. When properly applied by certified applicators the fumigant Methyl Bromide is proven to be the safest and most effective broad spectrum soil fumigant on the market. Methyl bromide is the most widely used soil fumigant to treat high value turf areas such as golf courses, athletic fields, sod farms and  tobacco farms. Each treated Green  has a sealed cover to contain the fumigant within the designated area. These covers will be removed tomorrow, Wednesday, June 13th.  The soil will then be allowed to vent for an additional 2 days. Each area treated was posted with safety signs notifying people to stay clear. Please be aware that this process is underway. It is important that everyone stays a reasonable distance from the area treated and exhibit caution.
