The society of the four 150x150

The residents of Old Palm are voracious readers that love to discuss thought-provoking books. Fortunately, they won’t have to wait for this season’s Ladies Book Club to begin to talk about their favorite bestsellers. The Society of Four Arts in downtown Palm Beach is now hosting book discussion groups at its Gioconda and Joseph King Library, located at 2 Four Arts Plaza. It doesn’t cost a thing and reservations aren’t required. Just show up with an understanding of the topic and a willingness to engage in enlightening conversation with other book enthusiasts. The next two events will discuss: “American Eve: Evelyn Nesbit, Stanford White” by Paula Urubura. This book recounts the true story of a gorgeous model in the early 19th century who became a national icon, and the scandal that followed when her insanely jealous millionaire husband murdered her lover, the esteemed architect Sanford White. (September 17 at 5:30 p.m.; September 18 at 11 a.m.) “Engineers of Victory” by Paul Kennedy. It’s a fascinating and inspiring tale of how small groups of individuals such as scientists, engineers and businessmen surmounted huge obstacles to help the Allies win World War II. Written by an award-winning Yale historian, the book was a New York Times bestseller. (October 8 at 5:30 p.m.; October 9 at 11 a.m.)
