Old Palm Golf Club recently held the Cigar Aficionado-Wine Spectator Pro-Am golf tournament as a fundraiser for Els for Autism, a foundation that Ernie Els and his wife Liezl established shortly after their son was diagnosed with autism. Held on Old Palm’s spectacular Raymond Floyd-designed golf course, the tournament was a great success, but the highlight came afterwards. On the 19th hole, a bye hole usually reserved to settle friendly wagers, Ricky Fowler hit what may well have been the most rewarding shot of his life. Wearing sneakers and using a borrowed pitching wedge from fellow pro Luke Donald, Fowler one-hopped his tee shot into the hole on the devilish 113-yard Par 3. The crowd erupted in cheers, Liezl cried tears of joy, and Els gave Fowler a big bear hug and raised him into the air in triumph. The shot was worth a $1 million donation to Els for Autism. Els later tweeted, “Will always remember this moment. Great support once again from the pros. Still can’t believe it.”
