Serious golfers love to play Old Palm’s spectacular Raymond Floyd-designed golf course. But that doesn’t mean we always take a serious approach to golf. Our recent Caddyshack golf event is a perfect example. It was pretty much an impromptu golf outing that we promoted as “Good Times. Good Friends. Good Grief!” And it lived up to its billing. Members were encouraged to wear their favorite costumes from the film “Caddy Shack.” For instance, they could come as deranged groundskeeper Carl Spackler (played by Bill Murray), loud and colorful Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield) or pompous Judge Smails (Ted Knight). Even the format was loosey-goosey. Pairings were chosen for maximum fun and had nothing to do with level skill. In fact, first-time golfers were welcome, and teams could design their own scramble format based on whatever they thought was best for them. As a bonus, the bye hole or 19th at Old Palm, was set up for a separate competition. The proceeds from that event were donated to the Red Nose Day Fund, which raises money for various local non-profits that benefit children. It was a wild afternoon of golf and everyone had a great time—just like in “Caddyshack.”
