If you are looking for a unique spin on a ladies’ night out, check out the new Chocolate Spectrum in Jupiter. Every month, from 7-9pm, ladies are guided through a global chocolate tasting while learning the art of spinning popular chocolate confections (to be taken home and enjoyed). But perhaps the sweetest part is the story behind this nascent locale. It was started by Valerie Herskowitz as a way to help her autistic adult son—and others like him—learn work skills and have a productively good time. “It wasn’t anything that I had planned to do,” she says. “But as I was training to become a chocolatier, my son got really into it.” Valerie, a professor, speech therapist and pastry chef is a strong community advocate for autism. Three weeks ago—on her sixtieth birthday— Chocolate Spectrum opened its doors, an idea that grew out of her kitchen for the past three years. The shop provides training and job opportunities for her son and other adults with special needs. Among the monthly classes offered are chocolate- and pastry- making primers for kids of all abilities. And if you don’t want to get your hands dirty in gooey goodness, you can still stop by and purchase homemade, artisanal flavored truffles, chocolate inspired pastries, European coffees and summer’s seasonal “citrus truffle” collection. Oh, and the best hot chocolate in town. Now that’s rich. For more information, contact: www.thechocolatespectrum.com 6725 W Indiantown Road, STE 38 561-277-9886
