“On the Mark”
March 28, 2012

by Mark Hackett, Director of Instruction, Old Palm Golf Club  One of the secrets to hitting quality shots when feeling pressure on the golf course is to rely on your pre-shot routine. Youâll notice that even the pros do it, especially when playing the back nine on Sundays, when so much is on the line. A consistent pre-shot routine will help you relax, improve your aim and swing tempo, and increase the probability of hitting a quality shot. If you donât have a reliable pre-shot routine, try this one: ⢠Stand behind the ball and choose a target to aim at. The smaller the target, the smaller the miss, so choose a small target. ⢠To help with alignment, choose an intermediate target such as a divot or even a leaf 3-5 feet in front of the ball. Try to fly the ball over that target.…

Another month, another fascinating book.
March 26, 2012

The Ladies Book Club at Old Palm Golf Club meets every month to discuss the latest bestsellers or simply favorites that may be recommended. The latest book that the club members read was âMy Fatherâs Paradise: A Sonâs Search for His Jewish Past in Kurdish Iraqâ by journalist Ariel Saber, a memoir that won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Autobiography It tells the true story of Saberâs quest to reconcile past and present by accompanying his father to a small village in Iraqi Kurdistan. When his father lived there in the 1940s, the village was so isolated that the people still spoke Aramaic, the language spoken during the time of Jesus but displaced centuries ago through much of the Middle East. In his book, Saber brings his fatherâs ancient village to life and uncovers a vanished history of an area thatâs now…

Ladies spend a fashionable evening at Saks Fifth Avenue
March 23, 2012

Fashion was center stage recently, when more than 45 ladies from Old Palm Golf Club attended a special evening at Saks Fifth Avenue in the Gardens Mall. It was quite the Ladies Night Out, starting with cocktails and a presentation by award-winning handbag designer Carlos Falchi, who showcased his latest creations. Interest was high among the ladies, as many of them carried Falchi handbags. Then it was on to the Saks beauty department, where Chanel national makeup artist John Fussel demonstrated the hottest looks for spring, followed by dinner and a private fashion show. The ladies saw the latest collections from designers such as Emilio Pucci, Escada, Stella McCartney, Piazza Sempione, Elie Tahari and many others. Finally, after dessert and a friendly game of “Fashion Wars,” the ladies returned to Old Palm, primed for another shopping spree.

Competition was fierce at the latest Men’s Member-Guest Invitational at Old Palm Golf Club, but you’d never know it because everyone was having so much fun. The festivities began with a day of practice rounds, cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres, and a spectacular stag dinner. The atmosphere was light and lively, as nearly 100 competitors mingled and welcomed guests, many of them from other clubs in the Palm Beaches Over the next two days, it was nonstop action. Trick shot artist Dan Boever dazzled the crowd, juicy steaks sizzled on the grill, tropical smoothies were whipped up in blenders and, of course, a lot of 9-hole matches were played on Old Palm’s Raymond Floyd-designed golf course. One of the members even aced the 15th hole. The competition came to a close on Saturday evening with a lavish awards dinner, where the winners in each flight were…
