On the Mark: Instant Fixes for Pitching
August 06, 2018

Mark Hackett, Director of Instruction at Old Palm Golf Club, shares some advice on how to instantly fix your shorthand golf game. Hackett was featured in Golf Magazine’s June 2018 issue and is deemed as one of American’s top 100 golf teachers.

Hackett explains that a player's stance over the ball is key to a perfect chip or pitch. If the ball is too far back in your stance, it results in the torso leaning away from the target and forcing too much weight on the back foot. This incorrect set up decreases the effectiveness of the club's loft and results in fat contact with the ball—ultimately eliminating the impact of the shot.

To make sure you get the contact and height you want in your pitch, Hackett suggests setting the ball in the center of your feet, with your shoulders and stance slightly open. Hackett…

On The Mark: Wide Starts
June 16, 2018

Mark Hackett, Director of Instruction at Old Palm Golf Club, has some fresh tips on the use of wide starts during players’ back swings to help our golf game. Hackett was recently featured in Golf Magazine’s May 2018 issue.

His advice? It's all about the backswing. By swapping hinge for width in your takeaway, you can gain big yards in your game. Many beginning golfers struggle with the idea of wrist hinge. Knowing when to utilize wrist hinge is the key, and early in the backswing isn’t the ideal time. By picking up the club during the takeaway you are potentially setting yourself up for a number of problems. An immediate pivot of the wrists reduces power and forces weak extension at impact.
