Old Palm Club Championship a Winner
April 10, 2014

Old Palm Golf Club’s very active Club Tournament schedule culminated this weekend with the Club Championship. The tournament format was match play with three Divisions for both Ladies and Gentlemen; including Scratch Handicap, Seniors, and Super Seniors. The format design is fun and permits everyone to participate against other members with similar skills or of a similar age. Aside from the Trophies that were awarded, it is the prestige and bragging rights of being a Club Champion that carries all the weight throughout the year. As always, Old Palm’s spectacular Raymond Floyd-designed golf course was in meticulous condition and each hole challenged the golfers. Add the spirit of competition, and this year’s Club Championship proved to be the ultimate test of our members’ prodigious skills.

The night before the event, more than 40 members in classic â50s outfits showed up for the pairings party at the Club Many of the men wore their hair slicked back, greaser-style. Women wore poodle skirts, and a few of them even dressed like Olivia Newton John, who played the lead in the 1978 movie âGrease.â Over cocktails and dinner, names were drawn out of a hat for the golf pairings. The following morning, the good times continued as the scramble-format tournament began. While everyone enjoyed themself; a few of Old Palmâs members had even bigger smiles when the results were tallied: Champions Sharon Deveney, Heather Lyons, Heather Macdonald and Ned Lipes Runners-up Bonnie Davis, Kelli Lionetti, Alan Bortnick and Bob Frazee Closest to the Hole Alan Bortnick (#2) Jim Deveney…
