Ladies Book Club to discuss another bestseller

The ladies at Old Palm Golf Club are definitely well read, and those in the Ladies Book Club are particularly literate. They have read and discussed several bestsellers this season, and this monthâs selectionâ âThe Storied Life of A.J. Fikryââis another well-respected novel Written by Gabrielle Zevin, the book has earned rave reviews ranging from âfunny, tender and movingâ to âan endearing story of redemption and transformation that will sing in your heart for a very, very long time.â The story follows the life of an irascible bookstore owner whose prize collection of Poe poems is stolen. He becomes even crankier and more isolated until a small package mysteriously arrives at his bookstore. Oktoberfest is on tap

October is just around the corner and that means Oktoberfest is close behind. This year’s annual Oktoberfest of the Palm Beaches (now in its 41st year) runs over two weekends: October 10-12 and 17-19. So put on your leiderhosen and come hungry because this is one of the countryâs largest and most entertaining Oktoberfest celebrations You can expect to find Bavarian favorites like sauerbraten, schnitzel and goulash, with all sorts of accompaniments, including sauerkraut, salty pretzels and giant pickles. Of course, nothing goes better with these traditional dishes than German beer, and there will be plenty of choices such as original Hofbräu Oktoberfest, Hofbräu Dunkel and Hofbräu Weizen The entertainment will be just as distinct and varied. Get a glimpse into pioneer life in Palm Beach County

What was life like in South Florida before air-conditioning, pest control and all the wonderful amenities at Old Palm Golf Club? Well, it was pretty uncomfortable For a revealing glimpse into the lifestyle of South Floridaâs early settlers, visit the DuBois Pioneer Home in Jupiter. Built in 1898 on an ancient Indian oyster shell mound, the two-story pine structure is the second oldest house standing on its original site in Palm Beach County. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places Recently renovated, the DuBois home is filled with authentic period furnishings, clothing and artifacts. Interestingly, the exterior walls were built on the diagonal to better withstand hurricanes. While living here, the pioneering DuBois family grew bananas, vegetables and pineapples.
