Get a glimpse into pioneer life in Palm Beach County

What was life like in South Florida before air-conditioning, pest control and all the wonderful amenities at Old Palm Golf Club? Well, it was pretty uncomfortable For a revealing glimpse into the lifestyle of South Floridaâs early settlers, visit the DuBois Pioneer Home in Jupiter. Built in 1898 on an ancient Indian oyster shell mound, the two-story pine structure is the second oldest house standing on its original site in Palm Beach County. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places Recently renovated, the DuBois home is filled with authentic period furnishings, clothing and artifacts. Interestingly, the exterior walls were built on the diagonal to better withstand hurricanes. While living here, the pioneering DuBois family grew bananas, vegetables and pineapples.  Thursday through September 5, Florida residents receive free admission to the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. Entry allows you to browse the permanent collections and the temporary exhibitions, and to enjoy the highly popular Art After Dark series that features live music, lectures by curators and films. Here are some of the offerings this month alone: • The permanent collection includes contemporary art such as Frank Stella’s geometric Yazd II, rare landscapes by American master George Bellows, and extraordinary works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Peter Paul Rubens. • “Wheels and Heels,” a temporary exhibition, takes a playful look at two iconic toys— the miniature car (epitomized by Matchbox and Hot Wheels brands) and the teenage doll (the most famous being Barbie). Even the greatest artists had to start somewhere. So if youâre looking to jumpstart your creativity, come to Crafts & Stuff in Palm Beach Gardens, just minutes from Old Palm Golf Club. Every Monday through August 11, the store will host a class called âIntro to Drawing 101,â and youâre invited During the free class (3:30-4:00pm), you will learn basic drawing techniques, how to add texture to shapes, and the best ways to evaluate space for composition. Students will also become educated on the artistsâ supplies available at Crafts & Stuff and will be given 20% off anything they purchase Immediately following the class, budding artists can join a longer, even more hands-on drawing class for $10.
