The slow-flowing, immensely scenic Loxahatchee River winds through Palm Beach County before finally flowing into the ocean through the Jupiter Inlet. One of the best places to learn about the riverâs 260-square-mile watershed and its great environmental value is at the Loxahatchee River Center, which is located less than 15 miles from Old Palm Golf Club The center is an enlightening setting featuring different marine species, interactive exhibits and a touch tank that represents various river systems, including the freshwater cypress swamp and marine ecosystem. To enhance the experience, visitors are welcome to participate in any of the recurring events. Enjoy cocktails in paradise

Every few months, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County holds a fun-filled event known as Cocktails in Paradise that celebrates our local history. Cafe Boulud in Palm Beach will host the next event on Tuesday, June 24 (5:30pm-7:30pm). Established in 1937, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County is a non-profit organization whose mission is to collect, preserve and share the history of the county. Its archives include two million photographs, maps, newspapers, journals and architectural drawings. Much of the collection is housed in a museum within the historic 1916 courthouse in downtown West Palm Beach, which also serves as the society’s headquarters. Watch loggerhead turtles lay their eggs

Now through September, loggerhead turtles emerge from the sea and lay their eggs on the beach. One of the best ways to watch this fascinating ritual is on an evening Turtle Walk at MacArthur Beach State Park in North Palm Beach. Itâs one of the few places in the county where you can observe loggerhead turtles up close and rest assured that youâre not disturbing them because a trained park ranger will accompany you The evening events start at 8pm (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) in the nature center with a movie about turtle behavior, why itâs important to wear dark clothing only, and how best to watch the loggerheads. A novel look at John Wayne

John Wayne was an icon, a larger-than-life symbol of America that epitomized the Western film. But there was much more to his story as revealed in Scott Eymanâs new book âJohn Wayne: The Life and Legend.â The author will be at the Norton Museum of Art on Thursday, May 29 (7-8PM) to discuss the man behind the legend. Itâs all part of the Nortonâs weekly Art After Dark series, which Old Palm members have been enthusiastically attending for years The book recounts all sorts of interesting facts about Wayne. It tells of his early days as a prop man on movie sets herding geese, Wayneâs three wives, his Oscar-winning performance in âTrue Grit,â and the harrowing details of his death from cancer in 1979.
